Hit and run accidents killed 2,000 people and were responsible for nearly one crash every minute on United States roadways, according to a new study by the AAA Traffic Safety Foundation. New Haven auto accidents that are hit-and-run continue to be on the rise.

The amount of these type of crashes are the highest on record since 2009. The study also reports from 2006 to 2016 in Connecticut, there were 148 hit and run crashes involving at least one death. There was an increase in fatalities from 2015 where there were 14 incidents compared to 2016 where there were 24 incidents. Over a six-year span, more than half of the fatal crashes in Connecticut generally occurred overnight, primarily on weekends, in the Fall.

Connecticut drivers who hit a pedestrian with their vehicle are required by law to stop, stay at the scene, provide aid if necessary, and call police.
