Getting the police report after an East Haven crash
Insurance companies and attorneys both rely on the police crash report, so it helps to get a copy early. Which agency has the report depends on who responded to the crash.
If East Haven police responded, most accident reports are available online through the department's Records Division. You will need the 10-digit case number, the date of the crash, and the name of one of the people involved. Reports that are not online can be requested from the Records Division in person, by mail, or by email.
If Connecticut State Police responded, in most cases the parties to the crash can view a free Accident Information Summary online for 30 days after the crash. That summary is preliminary and is not the official report. The official report for many simple crashes may be available to purchase online within thirty business days. Reports that are not available online within 30 days, including reports for crashes involving serious injuries or deaths, are requested through the State Police Reports and Records Unit's online portal.

What to keep after a car accident
Save what you can while it is fresh: photos of the vehicles, the scene, and your injuries; the other driver's name, insurance company, and plate number; the names and phone numbers of any witnesses; and your medical records, bills, and any letters or messages from insurance companies. Write down what you remember about the crash as soon as you are able, and keep a simple record of missed work.
