Motorcycle Accident Fatalities Dropped 5% In 2018
January 30, 2021The most recent data that has been reported by the United States National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) is that motorcycle fatalities dropped by 5% in 2018, the most recent year of data available. While this is a promising sign, the number of New Haven motorcycle accidents continues to be higher then the share of motorcycle drivers currently on the road. This is a troubling statistic.
The NHTSA reports that in 2018 the number of motorcycle accidents on the roads of the U.S. represented a staggering number at just under 5,000 accidents per year.
While the drop in fatalities is encouraging there is still work to do and the NHTSA is suggesting that motorcyclists take the following precautions to ensure that they are driving safely and protecting themselves from injury and death;
- Remain visible. Motorcycles can often blend in with traffic and are not seen by other motorists. Wearing clothing with reflective tape can certainly benefit motorcycle riders in being able to be seen better.
- Share the road. It can be tempting for motorcyclists to weave in and out of traffic, but it is incredibly dangerous. Following the rules of the road is important in keeping all drivers on the road safe.
- Wear a helmet. While Connecticut does not require helmets, it is a safety protocol that can save your life.
- Always ride sober. This is important for all drivers and is equally important for motorcyclists.
When riding your motorcycle you need to take steps to stay safe on the road. New Haven motorcycle accidents happen too often and you can do your part to make sure you are staying safe and keeping others on the road safe as well.
