Very few good things happen after midnight on Connecticut’s roads and that was the case when a group of teenagers who had stolen an SUV took to the roads of the city of Waterbury at nearly 2:30a and got into a crash that killed one of the teens in the vehicle. The devastating crash impacted five other passengers, the girl who was thrown from the vehicle and died on impact, another 15-year old who was in critical condition after the accident and three other people who were involved in the crash who sustained minor injuries.

While this accident occurred away from the Elm City, these types of New Haven auto accidents do occur from time to time and they are devastating when they happen. In this particular incident there were a number of illegal activities involved in the incident, but in some accidents there is no illegal activity involved they are just pure accidents and can be prevented by taking some safety measures to avoid being in a late-night accident.

While in the situation described above there were illegal activities with one of the vehicles, the other vehicle seems to have been abiding by the law and got involved in the accident, simply because they were sharing the road with the vehicle who was breaking the law. With that being said, while it doesn’t appear that the other vehicle was breaking the law they were participating in some risky behaviors that put them in a position to be involved in the accident. To avoid these types of accidents you should make sure you are avoiding risky behaviors that can put you into a situation like this one like the following;

1.) Driving late at night. Even if you are following all of the rules of the road and you are just trying to get from point A to point B at night, you are exposing yourself to drivers who may be drowsy or under the influence of substances that can impair their ability to drive. It is more likely that these drivers are on the road late at night and when you’re sharing the road with them you are putting yourself at a great risk of becoming injured in an accident.

2.) Speeding. While speeding is technically against the law, it is also one of the risky behaviors that a LOT of people participate in, especially when they are driving late at night. You might think that when you seem to be the only car on the road you can take some liberties with the speed limit, but rest assured, it only takes one out of control vehicle to take you by surprise and you wind up in an accident that will leave you injured, hospitalized or worse.

3.) Driving in unfamiliar areas. It may not be that dangerous to drive late at night if you are in your own neighborhood and heading home from someplace quite familiar, but what if you’re in an unfamiliar location where you don’t know the roads very well and you’re not sure of traffic flow, you could be put in a situation that could be difficult to navigate. Keeping yourself safe when you’re out driving also may mean avoiding areas of the city that you’re unfamiliar with so you don’t get into a situation where you are trying to pay attention to navigation and also paying attention to the road.

Driving at night at a high speed is one of the riskiest behaviors you can participate in when you’re behind the wheel. These two risky behaviors, combined with not being clear where you are can lead to a serious New Haven auto accident and can cause damage to your property and to your well-being. By avoiding these types of risky behaviors you are putting yourself in a safer situation and while there is no guarantee that you will not get into an accident, taking these precautions is certainly one way to keep yourself and your passengers safe.
