These Five Motorcycle Safety Tips Are Good For Any Rider
March 26, 2025There is nothing better than the first motorcycle ride of the fresh spring season. If you’ve had your bike stored for months now, it’s time to get back out and ride. However, even the most seasoned riders could stand some reminders for how to stay safe and avoid a New Haven motorcycle accident when on the road this spring.

You know the old expression, it’s just like riding a bike, well that may be true for the operation of the motorcycle, but you may not remember some of the things you need to do while riding to make sure you’re keeping yourself safe. It may have only been a couple of months since you last rode your motorcycle, but it’s been almost a year since you last rode your motorcycle in the spring and each season presents challenges and spring is no exception.
When you think about going out for your first ride, you may want to try to think ahead and take it in for a tune up before you even have your first ride. Even the most well-maintained motorcycle can need a little tightening and buttoning up after sitting for a few months. If you can do this on your own, by all means, have at it, but if you need someone’s help, don’t hesitate to spend the few bucks it will take to get your motorcycle looked at before you hit the road this spring.
Once you’re all tuned up you will need to remember some of these tips that you probably have already heard, but that you may need to be reminded of before you hit the street on your motorcycle this spring.
- Shake Off the Winter Rust (Rider and Bike): After a period of inactivity, both you and your motorcycle need a refresh. Take a few short, familiar rides to get your skills and reflexes back in tune before tackling longer or more challenging routes. Thoroughly inspect your bike (tires, fluids, lights, brakes) after winter storage.
- Be Prepared for Variable Weather: Spring weather can change rapidly, from sunny and warm to cold and rainy. Dress in layers so you can adjust to changing temperatures and consider carrying rain gear even on seemingly clear days.
- Watch Out for Spring Road Hazards: Melting snow and ice can leave behind potholes, gravel, and debris on roadways. Be extra vigilant and scan the road surface ahead to avoid these hazards, which can be particularly dangerous for motorcycles.
- Be Aware of Increased Traffic: With warmer weather, more cars, pedestrians, and cyclists will be out on the roads. Be extra alert, anticipate their movements, and maintain a safe following distance.
- Respect Wet Road Conditions: Spring showers can make roads slick and reduce traction. Slow down, ride smoothly, avoid sudden braking or sharp turns, and increase your following distance in wet conditions. Remember that the first few minutes of rain are often the most slippery as oil and debris mix with the water.
One other thing to consider when thinking about road conditions in the spring is to make sure you are on high alert for animals that may be crossing the road when you’re on the road as well. A New Haven motorcycle accident with an animal could kill the animal and cause significant harm to your motorcycle and in severe cases could even injure you significantly. It’s important to remember that animals are more active in the spring when the weather is warmer and they are not always on the lookout for you, so you must be for them.
