3 Places To Investigate At Your Home That Could Help Avoid A New Haven Slip and Fall Accident

The start of a new year is a great time to do some safety checks around your house.  Often people will change out their smoke alarm batteries at the turn of the calendar and there are also some other checks you should make to ensure that there are no safety hazards that go unresolved.  Today we’re going to talk about some safety hazards around your house that, if gone unchecked, could result in a New Haven slip and fall accident and could cause you headaches moving forward.

The first and most obvious place to check is your sidewalk.  If you live in a home where your sidewalks are your responsibility to maintain, this is a very dangerous spot for passersby and one that could cause serious injury or worse if not attended to.  You should closely inspect the sidewalk in front of your home to ensure that there are no cracks or lifted up pieces on the sidewalk that could presenting a tripping hazard.  If someone were to trip on your sidewalk, fall, and injure themselves you could be held liable for their injury.  While it may be difficult to get someone out to fix this type of damage on a sidewalk in the middle of the winter, you can certainly mark it with a cone or some caution tape and then schedule someone to come out to look at it and fix it once the weather warms and the ground thaws a bit.

Secondly you will want to inspect any stairs that are leading to your home.  With many of us at home and ordering more and more online, this is a prime way for a delivery driver to get injured if the stairs leading up to your home are wobbly or damaged in any way.  If there is damage that you cannot attend to right away you may want to make note when purchasing items online that there is an alternative location for delivery drivers to leave packages.  This will ensure that your package gets delivered and your delivery driver remains safe.

Railings are the third thing that you should investigate when making security inspections around the outside of your home.  Loose or damaged railings can cause a New Haven slip and fall accident very easily and can result in your liability.  The good news here is that, generally, even in the coldest weather, this is a repair that can be made now and you will not have to wait until the spring for it to be made.  Once it is repaired and returned to a safe setup you can breath easy when people are using the railing to guide their walking along your walkways and stairways.
