It can be quite startling when a deer jumps out into the road and in front of your car.  However, this happens more frequently then you might think in the Elm City and this time of year New Haven auto accidents from a collision with a deer are more common then ever.  Deer are much more active in the fall and therefore it is more likely that a collision like this would occur.

The good news is that there are a number of very simple things you can do to avoid this type of accident.  If you are alert and paying attention to the road in front of you you will likely be able to avoid an accident or at least minimize the damage caused by a deer in front of your car.  When you are driving down the street follow these safety tips:

  1. Watch for signs that indicate an increased deer crossing presence.  This is the easiest way to put yourself on high alert and will allow you to drive with a little more caution in an area that is marked for deer crossing.
  2. Use your headlights.  In the event that a deer jumps out in front of your car you will want to use your headlights to scare them off.  In this case, high beams are the most beneficial to ushering the deer back to the side of the road.
  3. Don’t drive at dusk or dawn.  Deer are the most active at these two times and you will put yourself in a much safer position to not get into an accident.
  4. Come to a complete stop.  You may be tempted to swerve around a deer that is in the middle of the road but if you can safely come to a complete stop, this is your best bet for avoiding an accident.
  5. If you have to, the last resort to get the deer out of your path is to use your horn.  This will undoubtedly spook the deer away from your car and allow you to pass.

When it comes to New Haven auto accidents a run in with a deer may not be on your list of top things to be on the lookout for, but this time of year it should be.  Deer are active this time of year preparing for the cold winter months and therefore are more common on our roads.  Following the above safety measures will keep you from getting into a serious accident and getting injured or worse.
