It may seem outlandish to think that you have to worry about a New Haven auto accident that involves your home, but truthfully, we are living in a strange time and it is something that you should keep in the back of your mind.  We’re not kidding.

If you don’t believe us that this is something that you should be thinking about you should ask a family in Norwalk who recently had a truck driven through their apartment leaving it with structural damage.  Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the damage may not be physical, it may be psychological over the long-term.  The man who was driving the truck was arrested and charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

In the extremely unlikely situation that something like this would happen to you and your family there are some things you should know about how to protect yourselves from the danger that comes from this type of incident.

1.) Get away from the point of contact immediately.  An incident like this can happen in the blink of an eye so you need to respond just as quickly.  In the event that a crash were to occur you will need to act fast and move as far away from the point of entry that the vehicle has into the home.  A good safe bet is to go to the back of the home and to the corners, because likely the vehicle will be driving in through the center of the home.  While this is not always the case, this is a good, safe first bet.

2.) After the incident, if you are on the second floor of the home get downstairs immediately.  If there is structural damage to the home, there is a possibility that the second level will collapse and cause even further damage or injury.

3.) Get out of the house immediately.  If you are lucky enough to avoid injury when the contact with the home first happens from the vehicle, you will want to remove yourself from the home immediately.  Homes, no matter how structurally sound they are, are not intended to survive the impact of a 2 ton or more vehicle and therefore the impact of the vehicle could very easily lead to damage to the home and additional injury after the “dust has settled.”

While an incident that involves a motor vehicle driving into your home may seem like a distant concern, and it probably is, you should still know what to do in the unlikely event that a New Haven auto accident involves your home.  It is likely that if you asked the family who went through this in Norwalk a few weeks ago whether they had to worry about this scenario or not they would have given a resounding NO.  It is important to be aware of all scenarios that could lead to injury or death in your life and be prepared for them with knowledge about what to do if they were to occur.
