New Year’s Eve is going to be a little bit different this year, but it may still have some of the same dangers as it has in years past. Given the stresses of this past year, you may be more inclined to drink a little heavier and party a little harder, which is fine, but we want to encourage you to make sure you’re doing it safely. While following COVID-19 guidelines is important, it cannot obscure your need to avoid excessive drinking and then getting behind the wheel. New Year’s Eve is one of the deadliest nights of the year for auto accidents and it doesn’t have to be that way.
If you’re heading out, anywhere for New Year’s Eve, do it safely and avoid a New Haven auto accident. Even if you don’t want to give up drinking on this night, there are some things you can do to make sure you stay safe and kick off 2021 with happiness and light. Here are three things that will keep you safe and allow you to have a Happy New Year!
- Stay Home. In a normal year this wouldn’t be on our list because we believe in getting out and having fun to ring in the New Year, but this year is a little bit different. The safest thing you can do is to stay home and celebrate with your immediate family. This will protect you from COVID-19, but also, if you’re choosing to drink this will allow you to drink without the concern of getting anywhere safely. You’ll already be home.
- Designate a driver. If you are going out somewhere, make sure before you head out you have selected the person who will be driving for the night. This should be someone who you trust to not drink before getting behind the wheel and who has the judgement to get you home safely at the end of the night.
- Call an Uber. You might be with a smaller than usual group of people this year and so it may be hard to agree on a designated driver. The good news is that you can still have a great time and get home safely, just call an Uber. It might cost you a few bucks, but that’s better then costing you your life.
This past year has been a tough one for so many of us and there is reason to be optimistic as we head into 2021, so make sure the choices you make on the last day of 2020 will make it so you can enjoy the new year in a way that you otherwise weren’t able to this past year.
