When you wake up in the morning and wipe away the night from your eyes, the last thing you might want to do is get in your car and drive miles and miles to your office, but now that many people are back in the office a morning commute continues to be a daily struggle.  It is also a time of day when there is a good likelihood of getting into a New Haven auto accident for a variety of reasons.

There is hope.

Getting to your office in the morning does not have to be a harrowing experience.  In fact, there are some proactive steps you can take to make sure that your trip in the morning is safe and free of any incidents.  Whether your commute is 10 miles or 100 miles these steps will help to keep it worry free and get you to office on time and in one piece.

Step #1: Get a good night’s sleep.  Yes, this is easier said than done, but it is also one of the most critical things you can do to keep yourself and your passengers safe while you’re behind the wheel.  If you are groggy and dozing off in while driving you can put yourself at serious risk of injury or even of a fatal car crash.

Step #2: Leave yourself plenty of time.  One of the biggest culprits of auto accidents is speeding.  If you’re racing to get into the office on time because you didn’t leave yourself the right amount of time to get there you are more likely to get into an accident.  If you think it will take you 20 minutes to get to the office, give yourself 30 minutes, just to be safe.  Adding a little extra time will keep you stress free and keep your foot from being too heavy on the gas pedal.

Step #3: Drink your coffee at home.  If you’re the type of person that needs that first cup of coffee in the morning to really get going, brew it at home.  If you wait until you get in the drive-thru you are setting yourself up for additional stress and shaving valuable time from your allotted amount of extra time to get you to the office safely.  Also, eating and drinking in the car can be a serious distraction and distracted driving will certainly not help you get to the office in time.

Step #4: Leave your work at work.  Depending on your job it can be important for you to check your emails and messages before you get into the office and for some people that might be good so you know what to expect before you get there, but it can also be stressful and distracting.  If your job allows you to, don’t check your messages or email before you head into the office.  If you absolutely must know what’s going on before everyone else gets into the office, aim to get to the building 10-15 minutes before everyone else so you can get a jump start.

A morning commute can be stressful and if you must drive into the office it can add to your daily layer of problems if you’re not careful.  Taking these four steps will put you in a position to not get into a New Haven auto accident and even though that is not a guarantee they will certainly help put you in a safer position.
