Don’t Let Summer Distractions Take Your Eyes Off The Road

Now that the 4th of July holiday weekend is behind us there are going to be some distractions around that may fight for your attention while you’re behind the wheel.  These distractions can often lead to New Haven auto accidents and should be avoided at all costs.

Of course we have talked on this site before about the dangers of in car distractions like cell phone use, eating food, and passengers talking to you while you’re driving, but now we want to talk about outside distractions that can take your eyes off the road for a split second and lead to an injury or worse.  The city of New Haven is filled with these types of distractions all summer long.

1.) Summer festivals on the green:  When driving around the city during the summer months you may notice that there are far more festivals and shows happening on the green then under normal circumstances.  It can be tempting to take your eyes off the road in front of you and peer over at what is happening on the green.  However, taking your eyes off the road for even a split second to see what is happening could lead to a terrible accident.

2.) Road races and bike races:  Not only are road races and bike races more common during the summer months they can also re-route traffic and cause headaches for everyday commuters.  If you’re driving by a road race it can be tempting to sneak a peak at what the racers are doing, but that can lead to really serious issues from getting lost to getting into an accident that could cause an injury.

3.) Additional summer traffic:  There is often more traffic on the roads during the summer months meaning you could be stuck behind the wheel for longer periods of time.  This can cause a couple of issues like losing your focus because you’re waiting so long for the traffic to move and also it can cause your mind and your eyes to wander while behind the wheel.  If you fall victim to this distraction you may find yourself getting injured or injuring someone else.

No matter what the distraction if you fail to focus and keep your attention on the road you may be leading yourself down the path of a New Haven auto accident.  Even slow moving traffic can lead to injuries or worse, depending on the circumstances, so you will want to be careful no matter what the circumstances are that you’re driving in.
