A multi-car New Haven auto accident was said to be the result of a man who was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) after he side-swiped a vehicle on I-95 which led to additional vehicles being involved in the crash.  The crash, luckily only led to minor injuries, but the man who was involved was arrested and charged with DUI.

This incident is a fresh reminder of the dangers that come with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  While this accident only led to minor injuries, others that have involved a driver who was under the influence have certainly led to greater injuries and often to a fatality on our roads.  There is no reason to ever drive drunk or drugged, especially in this day and age with so many options to get you to and from your destination without getting behind the wheel after having had a drink or been on drugs.

As a friendly reminder, here are some of your options instead of getting behind the wheel.

1.) Ride sharing is a great option as it allows you to get to and from your destination on your own time.  You can control when you arrive and when you leave from your destination.  The other great thing about a ride share service like Uber or Lyft is that even if you had started the night not planning to have alcohol or do drugs, but changed your mind once you got to where you are going, you can call and Uber and get home safely with very minimal change to your plans or difficulty trying to figure out something to get you safely to your destination.

2.) Designate a driver.  This is always a good thing, whether you’re planning on drinking or doing drugs or not.  You should always identify a person in your party who is willing to avoid having any drinks or doing any drugs that night and can stay sober to get everyone home safely.  Of course, this must be a person you can trust with staying sober for the night and to make responsible decisions on your behalf and others you are with.  This option does require some planning, but it can certainly be the difference between getting home safely or getting into an accident and injuring yourself or someone else.

3.) Stay home.  While this is the most restrictive option, it is certainly the safest.  If you’d rather not worry about how much you’re having to drink or how many drugs you’re planning on doing in a particular night, your safest bet is to avoid getting on the road at all and stay home.  If you’re home, there is no risk of getting behind the wheel and making a bad decision.  You can finish your night and get right into bed without incident.

When you’ve been drinking or doing drugs and you get behind the wheel there are two different outcomes that can happen.  One, you can get pulled over and arrested and then you will need a New Haven DUI attorney who can work with you to protect your long-term interests.  Two, you can get into a New Haven auto accident and cause an injury to yourself or someone else and you are also putting yourself at risk of causing a fatality.  Either outcome is not desirable and you should avoid it at all costs.
