Just down the road in Bridgeport a young child was riding with a group on electric scooters when an accident occurred and the child and an adult female were injured and rushed to the emergency room.  The pair were a part of a larger group who were riding electric scooters throughout the city and after running into a metal pole in crosswalk faced a serious head injury.

Electric scooters are relatively new, but are also growing rapidly in popularity to the point where these types of accidents are on par with New Haven bicycle accidents.  In some cases, injuries sustained from an electric scooter accident can be more severe and involve more individuals then just the one riding the scooter at the time.

If you are planning on riding an electric scooter there are some safety tips you should know.  Some of these mirror safe driving when it comes to bicycles, but there are others that are exclusive to electric scooters.

1.) Learn how to operate the scooter.  It may look simple, but there are aspects to riding a scooter that are different then riding a bicycle or even another motorized vehicle.  If you don’t know all of the operations of the vehicle and have a need to use them you may find yourself getting into an accident.

2.) Wear a helmet.  This goes for anyone riding a bicycle as well, but one of the best ways you can keep yourself safe, even if you do find yourself in an accident is by wearing a helmet.  A helmet will protect you in the event that you run into something or fall off the scooter and land on the pavement head first.

3.) Keep your speed down.  It can be tempting when riding a motorized vehicle to pick up the speed and go whizzing through the streets of the city, but there are a lot of things that can go wrong when you’re riding with excessive speed.  Just like when you are in a motor vehicle, excessive speed is one of the main causes of injury and accident when driving an electric scooter.

4.) Follow all the rules of the road.  While an electric scooter is not a traditional vehicle, it should be treated like one.  You should follow all rules of the road while riding through the city.

If you’ve never ridden an electric scooter before, they can be fun and exciting, especially if you’re the type of person that likes to try new things.  However, they can also be dangerous and get you into an accident that may be even worse then a New Haven bicycle accident.  Similarly to riding a bike, if you follow safety precautions and learn the proper way to ride an electric scooter you will be more likely to stay safe.
