How A New Haven Car Accident Can Involve An Inanimate Object

A recent late-night car accident in Fairfield, Connecticut involved a car running straight into a storefront at full speed.  The store front was demolished and the driver of the vehicle was rushed to the hospital for care.  The cause of the accident was not immediately known, but officials were investigating it.

It brought to mind incidents that have happened over the years here in the Elm City where a New Haven auto accident involved inanimate objects like store fronts or street signs.  How exactly does this happen and how can it be avoided in the future?  The short, and somewhat simple answer is this, negligence on behalf of the driver.  If there is only one vehicle involved in an accident there is simply no other way to look at it then a negligent driver was behind the wheel.

This begs the question, how to you prevent yourself from being put into a situation like this?

  1. Do not drive late at night unless you absolutely have to.  The accident in Fairfield happened at 2:25am.  This is often the case with accidents that involve inanimate objects, drivers are out way past an appropriate time to be driving and then get into a situation where they are faced with being groggy and they lose control of the vehicle.  A good rule of thumb is to be off the road no later than midnight.
  2. Slow down.  Incidents with inanimate objects often occur when the driver of the vehicle is going over the speed limit.  Driving over the speed limit will always increase your chances of getting into an accident, but particularly your chances of losing control of your car and veering into an object that is not moving is increased exponentially.
  3. Do not drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  One of the fastest ways to lose control of your vehicle is to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  Not only can driving with these substances in your system get you in serious legal hot water they can also get you into a situation where you are not driving safely and can injure yourself or someone else.

Luckily the incident that occurred in Fairfield did not involve anyone who was inside the storefront at the time of the accident because the store was empty, but if there were people inside there would most certainly be injuries and quite possibly even deaths.  When you get yourself into a New Haven auto accident you are not only putting yourself at risk, you are putting many people at risk.  Following the above rules will help you avoid this type of incident and will keep you and those around you safe as well.

However it may happen, if you find yourself in an accident and are injured you may need to speak with an attorney who can review your case and work with you to protect your long-term interests.  Our office has experienced attorneys that can speak with you today.
