The danger of getting into a New Haven auto accident are well known, but did you know that a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of them and can result in long term damage?  An auto accident can lead you to hit your head and worse cause severe internal injury to your brain.

The good news is that there are ways to prevent this type of injury.  Accidents happen, but they don’t have to be as severe as they are often are.  Here are a few things you can do to protect yourself against the dangers of a TBI while driving in your car.

  1. Wear your seat belt.  92% of all drivers in the state of Connecticut already do this and it is one of the easiest ways you can avoid a TBI while driving.
  2. Slow down.  The slower you are driving the less damaging your accident will be.  While you cannot control other drivers on the road, you can control how you drive and that will benefit you in the long run.
  3. Skip the distractions.  Looking down at your phone or radio for just a split second can lead to you rolling through an intersection for instance which can cause a collision that can be very damaging.
  4. Do not drive under the influence.  Impairment from drugs or alcohol can cause higher speeds and less attention to the road which will lead to a greater risk of an accident.

Any New Haven auto accident can be devastating, but one that results in a TBI can be life altering, but if you follow the tips above and drive safely you can avoid this type of injury and prevent a lifetime of a recovery.
