In sports, athletes who are inclined to fall a lot are often taught “how to fall.”  It may sound funny having to learn how to fall, but in learning these skills athletes are often preventing themselves from getting seriously injured.  An injury from a fall can leave an athlete out of playing time for weeks if not months.  When they are taught how to fall, an injury that otherwise might have been a broken bone or a heavy sprain now becomes something to be shaken off and allows them to get back on the playing field sooner.

The same techniques can be taught to anyone who may be at risk of a New Haven slip and fall injury.  If you learn how to fall you will be able to be ready for an accident and then be able to protect yourself against any long-term injury that might occur from an unexpected fall.  Take these steps to learn how to fall and you could go from having a serious injury from a fall to having just a mild injury that you can quickly bounce back from.

  1. Do not brace yourself for a fall with your hands.  It is human nature to put your hands out as you start to feel yourself falling, but doing so leaves your wrists, fingers, and elbows vulnerable to serious injury.  No matter whether you’re falling hard and from a height or from a low spot and not too hard, bracing yourself with your hands can cause damage that otherwise wouldn’t have occurred.  This is something that you have to practice and can be difficult to actually follow through on in the event that you are falling, but if you get it right you can protect yourself from any serious injury to your arms and hands.
  2. Protect your head at all costs.  If you find yourself falling you will want to do everything you can to insure that your head is not hitting the ground hard.  A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can easily occur if you are not falling properly and if you do fall properly you will be protecting yourself and your body from long-term injury.  A TBI can be something that you feel the effects of for many years to come and if you are able to protect your head from getting injured you can save yourself from months and even years of agony over a very difficult injury that is hard to comeback from.
  3. Slow down.  One of the best things you can do to protect yourself from getting seriously injured in a slip and fall accident is to limit your chances of getting into an accident in the first place.  The best way to do this is to slow down wherever you are going.  If you’re headed to the store, don’t rush.  If you’re late for work, take the extra time.  Getting to your destination safely and without injury is far more important then being a few minutes late.

No matter where you’re going or what you’re doing the simple fact of the matter is that New Haven slip and fall accidents may occur.  Knowing how to prevent one or protect yourself against serious injury if a fall were to occur is the best thing you can do to make sure you stay safe throughout your day to day life.
