New Haven auto accidents happen throughout the year, but during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations we can see many drivers under the influence. Nearly one-third of all United States car accident deaths are the result of alcohol impairment. When you are driving around the Greater New Haven area, keep your eye out for drunk drivers by looking for these signs:

  1. Driving anywhere other than the road
  2. Driving over the center line marker
  3. Driving on the wrong side of the road
  4. Almost striking a curb, vehicle or object
  5. Tailgating
  6. Using signals that do not match direction of the vehicle
  7. Driving without headlights at night
  8. Quickly turning
  9. Stopping without cause or “riding the brake”
  10. Weaving across the road
  11. Driving slower than 10 mph
  12. Swerving
  13. Quick acceleration or deceleration
  14. Slow response to traffic signals
  15. Drifting in and out of traffic lanes

If you spot a drunk driver while driving in New Haven here is what you can do:

  1. Keep a safe distance between your car and their car.
  2. Always stay behind them. Do not try to pass.
  3. If you are able to safely remember the license plate number, make and model, do so. Please do not put yourself or your passengers in danger to collect this information.
  4. When it is safe call 911 and report this information and your location.
