As New Haven auto accident attorneys, we’ve seen our fair share of bad accidents. While having a car makes it easy to get around and for some it is a necessity, there are certain safety risks that come along with having one. While you do everything you can to be safe on the road and drive defensively, being involved in a rear-end collision in most cases happens when you least expect it — and out of your control. While hopefully you’ll never have to experience a rear-end collision, here are the three most common injuries that can happen as a result.

  1. Whiplash. When your head is quickly jerked back and forth by a powerful force, that is whiplash. With a rear-end collision, whiplash happens extremely fast. Symptoms include headache, neck pain, and dizziness. More severe cases might affect memory and eye sight.
  2. Spinal cord injury. These injuries happen when there is a significant blow to the spinal cord itself, the ligaments, or disks of the spine. The blow doesn’t have to fracture the spine, dislocation can cause severe amounts of pain. Aside from being painful, this type of injury can affect your movement, and in some cases can cause a permanent loss of function.
  3. Broken ribs. Car accidents are a leading cause of broken ribs, except people do not often know they have them. You only feel discomfort from broken ribs when you move in certain positions, cough, or laugh.
