The weather is changing and the temperatures are climbing, but that doesn’t mean because much of the ice and cold weather have subsided that the danger of a New Haven slip and fall accident has subsided with the changing weather conditions.  It is important that as the weather changes you are aware of the significant dangers that still exist that could lead to an injury to you or a loved one.

Some of the injuries that could occur as the result of a slip and fall accident include traumatic brain injuries (TBI), strained or sprained muscles, fractured bones and whiplash among others.  These injuries can range from mild to very serious to even fatal.  Any accident, by definition comes up unexpectedly, but a slip and fall accident in the spring would be one of the more surprising things that could arise from your time out.

What are the most likely causes of a slip and fall accident in the spring?

1.) Raised or cratered sidewalks.  During the cold winter months the freezing and thawing of sidewalks and walkways can often make the concrete or asphalt either buckle and raise up or crater and sink into the ground.  Either way, the affect that the weather has on the ground can often lead to hazards that will leave dangerous spots when out for a mid-afternoon or evening walk along sidewalks and walkways.

2.) Slippery surfaces.  Ice is not the only type of weather that can leave a surface slippery, in fact, often rain can cause slick patches of road or sidewalk and when combined with yard debris such as fallen leaves leftover from the autumn cleanup or from weather that has blown through during the winter months.  When debris is mixed with moisture it often leaves a slick layer that could lead to falls that would result in injuries.

3.) Loose or broken stairs.  With the winter months wear and tear often takes over with stairs, specifically outdoor stairs.  Without maintenance and through the impact of colder weather these stairs may become loose and pieces may dislodge from them leaving incomplete steps and opening the door for dangerous conditions.  If you are not looking out for these conditions you may find yourself falling a long way to the pavement down below and become injured, quite severely.

It is not the first thing you may think about when you’re out for a walk in the spring air, but a New Haven slip and fall accident is something to not be taken lightly.  If you are aware of the possible dangers that lie outside on a walk through the Elm City as the result of a cold winter and a wet spring then you will take the proper precautions to keep yourself safe as you walk about.
