The city of New Haven and the state of Connecticut at large have been experiencing a dramatic increase in pedestrian deaths in recent years. The epidemic of New Haven pedestrian accidents is something that city officials have been working on for sometime now and are beginning to address with updates to the city’s infrastructure.
The city is intending to use federal money that was part of a grant to make roads and streets throughout the city safer for those pedestrians who are riding their bikes and walking through the city. There is a $400,000 grant from the federal government to do this work which will include the following;
- Narrowing some roads to make it necessary for drivers to slow down to pass. This will force the issue of encouraging drivers to slow down in certain areas where speed has become an increasing problem and has led to pedestrian accidents in recent years.
- Utilizing paint to highlight pedestrian areas so that drivers are able to see pedestrians and be made more aware that pedestrians may be in the area. These new painted areas will address needs on the following roads throughout the city, Blatchley Avenue, Bassett Street, Kimberly Avenue, Wintergreen Avenue, Winthrop Avenue and Sherman Avenue
These critical investments are just the latest in the line of defense for city officials who are doing as much as they can to stem the tide of increasing deaths at the hand of New Haven pedestrian accidents. City officials are looking at all potential options to improve safety throughout the city as the Elm City is one of the most walked cities in New England and even small improvements can be made to make a big difference.
Getting into an accident with a motor vehicle may not always result in a fatality, in fact it often will not. Injuries are very common from these types of accidents so while these calming measures that are being put into place are indeed intended to curb pedestrian deaths, they will also have the added benefit of curbing injuries in these types of accidents as well.
