The Governors’ Highway Safety Association recently released a report on pedestrian traffic fatalities. Connecticut fatalities have increased 53% from 2017 to 2018. From January to June 2018, 29 pedestrians were killed on Connecticut roadways; for the same time period in 2017, 19 pedestrians were killed.

The GHSA cites increased unsafe driving behaviors, unfriendly infrastructure, as well as an increased presence of sport utility vehicles (SUV).

Both motorists and pedestrians have a responsibility to stay safe on the roads. Here are a few things both can do:

  1. Obey all posted signage, lights, and traffic laws.
  2. Stay alert whether behind the wheel or on the sidewalk.
  3. Keep your phone in your pocket or purse when traveling to avoid distraction.
