The holiday season is upon us and that means fun with family and friends, but it can also mean lots of house guests coming over to visit which puts you in a bit of a precarious situation.  You want your home to be welcoming to all your guests and you most certainly don’t want them to feel unsafe in your home at all.  There are many hazards that could present themselves as New Haven slip and fall accident risks and if you don’t take care of those before you have company you will be stressing during the holidays when you should be celebrating.

There is no need to panic though, because you have a few weeks before the holidays and your house guests will be coming over and you can make some small adjustments and repairs to your home to make sure that your guests have the type of stay you want them to have without any of the dangers.  If you make these repairs or adjustments you can feel confident that your guests will enjoy themselves and you can feel stress free about the visit.

Whether you’re a handy person or not, some of these repairs and adjustments can be quite easy to implement and done in a timely manner so that you can have a stress free holiday.

1.) Stair railings.  Whether you have one set of stairs or many in your home or apartment you will want to check that your railings are secure and not wobbly at all.  A wobbly stair railing can lead to unsteady guests on your stairs which can become a problem and lead to an injury.  Usually a simple screwdriver will do the trick to get this one fixed and you will have a solid railing for your guests to use as they climb up and down the stairs in and around your home.

2.) Uneven flooring.  This can take all forms, but one very common, but often unseen flooring issue are area rugs.  Area rugs, especially for older visitors can present a tripping hazard and lead to an injury.  While you may not want to pull up your area rugs in your home, you will want to make sure the edges of them are free from debris so they can be easily seen and avoided as your guests step onto them.

3.) Ice and snow removal.  While we have not had a lot of snow or ice yet this season, it can happen anytime and when it does it can be a real slipping hazard which can lead to an injury from a fall.  You should always make sure the sidewalks and walkways around your home are clear and ice free, but especially when you are planning to have guests to your home.  If you make sure to shovel and lay rock salt, you should be covered here, but do one extra check before your guests are set to arrive.

You cannot foresee all hazards around your house.  Your long lost uncle might have a few too many eggnogs and trip his way into an injury, but if you can take the above steps you will at least be making your home safer for the vast majority of people who are visiting.  If you can do whatever it takes to keep your house guests safe and free from a New Haven slip and fall accident you will be doing your part to keep the holidays merry and bright.
