In a recent Facebook post, the drummer for the band Talking Heads detailed an incident that occurred in which he and a passenger in his car was injured due to a drunk driver.  There is relief in reading the post that neither of the two were injured too badly, but it is an important reminder that dangers lurk on the streets of every city and town in the state of Connecticut.  The accident involved a drunk driver who was driving the wrong way down the road.  The collision was head on and could have resulted in even more significant damage then it did.

Whether you’re a rock star or an individual just trying to make it to work safely you can be injured too.  Here are some friendly reminders to make sure that you are doing everything you can to avoid a New Haven auto accident and things you can do so that if you do get into an accident it is not as severe.

  1. Always wear your seatbelt.  One of the best things you can do to protect yourself when being involved in an accident is to wear your seatbelt.  Seatbelt have been shown to limit or even eliminate injuries in certain accidents.  Certainly wearing a seatbelt is better then not and can have a dramatic impact on your safety.
  2. Slow down.  Speed is one of the most significant factors in whether or not you get into an accident and if you do get into an accident at determining how severe it is going to be.  Excessive speed is often cited as a factor in an automobile accident and depending on the level of speed it can also impact whether or not a fatality may occur.
  3. Use your turn signals.  One of the things we do not talk about enough on this blog is the use of turn signals.  The best thing you can do to avoid being hit is to use the proper signaling when turning at an intersection.  If you do not signal, another vehicle may also be turning in the direction that you are and may cause you to get into an accident.
  4. Confirm your brake lights and headlights are functional.  Once a month you should check to make sure that you do not have a brake light or a headlight out.  If you do, you should replace it immediately.  Brake lights, in particular, can have a very serious impact on your ability to drive safely through the city.

The above safety measures are not a comprehensive list, but they are certainly good first steps in keep yourself and your passengers safe in the event that you are involved in a New Haven auto accident.  Taking preventive precautions can be the difference between ending up in the hospital with severe injuries and avoiding an accident all together.
