The fall is one of the best times of year to be out riding your motorcycle.  As the leaves start to turn and the weather cools down riding your bike can be one of the most exhilarating ways to experience the state.  Unfortunately there is a chance that being out on your bike will get you entangled in a New Haven motorcycle accident.   The risk of an accident is there whenever you head out, but especially in the fall when there are wet leaves and the potential for black ice on the roads.  It is for this reason that this season more then any other you should be wearing the appropriate gear to keep yourself safe.

Riding your motorcycle should be fun and exciting not dangerous and if you wear the right protective gear you will be just fine while you enjoy the pleasures of a long ride.  If you make sure you’ve got these three items at the ready you’ll be able to hop on your bike and ride whenever you like, safely.

  1. Your helmet.  While there is no helmet requirement in Connecticut for riders over the age of 18, this is still the most essential piece of safety equipment you can wear while you’re riding your motorcycle.  A head injury from a motorcycle accident as a result of not wearing a helmet can be devastating and truly life altering.  The best and easiest thing to do to protect yourself from serious injury while riding is to wear a helmet.
  2. Gloves.  Protecting your hands while riding will also be good for your safety if you are ever involved in an accident.  In many cases a rider’s first instinct when there is an accident is to put her/his hands out to protect the rest of their body.  You can imagine how damaging that would be if you didn’t have any gloves on and your hands went skidding across the pavement.
  3. Boots.  You may not think of your feet as something you need to worry about when riding a motorcycle, but truth be told boots will protect your feet and your lower leg from getting burned on the tailpipe and also from skidding across the pavement when you fall.  Without the proper footwear you could be in for a really serious injury in the event that you get thrown off your bike.

While safety equipment is not the flashiest of topics when thinking about riding your motorcycle it can be the thing that saves your life and let’s you live to ride another day.  Getting into a New Haven motorcycle accident without the proper gear on can have a lasting impact on your life and be what stops you from enjoying the thrill of the ride for days, weeks, and even years to come.
