Now that the confetti has all fallen and the calendar has turned it’s time to focus on making 2022 the best year yet and one of the things you can do to help yourself insure that it is is making New Year’s resolutions that will keep you from getting into a New Haven auto accident.  There is nothing that would dampen your spirits in the new year more then getting into an accident and either getting seriously hurt or damaging your property.  That’s why, one of the best things you can do to have a happy 2022 is to plan to keep yourself safe and out of dangerous situations.

There are some very simple things you can do that will help you avoid the types of situations that can cause damage or injury.  If you make a concerted effort to plan ahead and work on the dangerous driving habits you may have developed over the years then you can spend your year enjoying life without worrying about whether or not you are going to get injured when you get behind the wheel.

While these are not the only resolutions that could keep you safe when you’re driving, they are some of the things you can do and they will make a big difference.

  1. Stowe your cellphone while driving.  Even the most disciplined among us have a hard time resisting when we’re driving and our phone dings to tell us we have a new message.  Even if you’ve been good enough to put your phone on silent, it can be very distracting to see a new notification pop up on your screen.  The only truly safe way to travel with your cellphone in the car is by stowing it away.  If you use your phone for directions or music or a podcast, put those on before you start driving and then tuck your phone away in your glove box or center console so you can focus on the road.
  2. Get enough sleep.  Drowsy driving is one of the most dangerous things you can do behind the wheel.  Prioritizing your sleep will be good for your health, but it will also be good for your driving health as well.  Being alert and wide awake while driving is one of the best things you can do to help yourself prevent an accident.
  3. Don’t eat while behind the wheel.  In our busy lives it can be tempting to pick something up at the drive-thru and then head off to our destination while eating that something, but it is dangerous and distracting to be doing something other than driving while you’re behind the wheel.  If you must eat on the go, go inside the restaurant and eat sitting down instead of while you’re behind the wheel.  This will help you avoid being distracted while driving and you will get to your destination more safely.

We know New Year’s resolutions can be tough to stick to, so maybe you should start with one of these in 2022.  If you do none of them your chance for getting into a New Haven auto accident will go up and your year may go from great to bad very quickly.  Take the one that you need the most work on and work hard on it to keep yourself and your passengers safe.
