Three Spring Safety Tips To Avoid A New Haven Motorcycle Accident

There is no better time to ride your motorcycle then the spring in New Haven.  The weather is warming up and there are a whole host of beautiful places to visit on a day ride that will leave you breathless.  However, spring can also be a dangerous month to be riding your motorcycle and could lead to a New Haven motorcycle accident if you don’t take precautions.

Even the most experienced rider may come out in the spring and be a little rusty from a few months of having the bike stored and not riding it.  Any good rider knows to take it easy before hitting the road and excessive speeds which have been shown to be the greatest indicator of serious injury in both car and motorcycle accidents.  Easing into the spring season is the best thing a motorcycle rider can do in order to maintain safety.

There are other things that a motorcycle rider can do during the spring months that can keep her/him safe from injury.  These safety tips are good to keep in mind year round, but are particularly of note in the spring months when the weather is warming and the streets are not yet clean for the summer.

1.) Avoid patches of sand leftover from the winter months of sanding/salting the roads to keep them from being slippery.  A patch of sand or salt that has not yet been swept away by street sweepers can be an area of particular concern for riders who are out in the spring months.  Once these patches of sand and salt are removed they become less of an issue, but in the first few months of the spring they are everywhere.

2.) Always wear a helmet.  No motorcycle safety post would be complete without talking about the importance of wearing a helmet.  We know there is no helmet law requiring adult riders to wear a helmet in the state of Connecticut, but it is the one thing you can do to keep yourself safe if you were to get into an accident.  Wearing a helmet may not prevent you from getting into an accident, but it will certainly keep you from getting seriously injured in the event of an accident.

3.) Wear high visibility clothing.  If you haven’t guessed by now, the clothing you wear when riding a motorcycle is so important.  Wearing reflective gear that can be easily seen at all times of day and in all conditions will help keep you safe from getting into an accident.  If other drivers can’t see you, you are putting yourself at risk.  If you are highly visible you will be in a much safer position.

The spring season can be a time of renewal and an opportunity to reengage with your motorcycle and fall in love with it all over again.  It would be a shame if a New Haven motorcycle accident got in the way of you enjoying your time riding and made it so that you were unable to enjoy yourself throughout the spring and summer months.  Taking into account the weather and other factors can be important in keeping yourself safe all season long.
