Modern motor vehicles come equipped with different beeps and bops and alarms and notifications that are designed to keep you safe and avoid a New Haven auto accident.  These new technologies are evolving quickly and they vary greatly from vehicle to vehicle.  It is important to know how your vehicle handles these types of safety alerts so you can respond to them accordingly.

The best thing you can do to make sure you are aware of the sounds and alerts that your vehicle is making is to review the vehicle’s operating manual which will give you an indication of what the different lights and sounds mean when you are driving your vehicle.  The operating manual will highlight each and every alert and notification that you may receive while you’re driving so you are not surprised when you see something new.

With that being said, it can be jarring the first time you hear or see a new alert or light.  Therefore, it is important for you to take a few steps when you experience a new alert so that when it happens again you are aware of what it is for and how to use it to your advantage for the safety of you and your passengers.

Step #1: Adjust your driving according to the severity of the alert.  For instance, if an alert sounds and it is a very quick repetitive beep, that may indicate that there is danger nearby.   In that case, you should safely slow down and investigate the road around you.  Again, these alerts are different in every vehicle from every manufacturer so you should understand the alert system in your vehicle.

Step #2: Once you’ve identified what the alert is and you’ve taken action to correct whatever it is you are being alerted to you should return to your previous speed and lane and continue to drive safely.  If you allow the alert to startle you to the point where you change your driving behaviors dramatically you may find yourself in a dangerous situation that is made worse by the fact that you are uneasy.

Step #3: Go back to your operating manual and review the alert that you heard to make sure you interpreted it correctly.  You should do this as soon as possible so the alert sound and frequency is fresh in your mind and you are able to identify it properly when you re reading about it in the manual.

Safety alerts are designed to protect you against incidents that could lead to a New Haven auto accident but they can be jarring and make you feel uncertain if you are unsure of what they are and what you are being alerted to.  If you don’t take the time to understand each beep and bop that your vehicle makes you could be putting yourself at risk of not taking action when you are alerted to the need for action.
