They say clothes can make the man (or woman) but can clothes also save the man (or woman) from getting into a New Haven bicycle accident?  Of course they can.  You can have all the equipment ready for your bike ride, but if you’re heading out during the late fall in the Elm City you need to be dressed appropriately for your ride as well.

When you’re thinking about hoping on your bicycle for a quick ride or you’re commuting using your bike you will need to be focused on the time of day you’ll be riding and what that requires for you to arrive safely to your destination.  If you’ll be consistently riding at night you will want to make sure you have the equipment that you will need to ride safely.  For instance, you may want to install a headlight and a taillight to your bike so you can easily see the road ahead of you and so traffic coming up behind you can easily see you.  This is just one of the small pieces of equipment that can make you more visible as you ride.

Then it is important to think about your clothing.  You may not always put clothing at the top of your list for safety gear when riding a bike, but if you’re out riding during the late fall and the weather is changing you will need to be prepared.  Here are some items of clothing you will want to make sure you have before you head out on a ride.

1.) Reflective clothing/tape to add to existing clothes.  As daylight savings time ends early next month you may find yourself riding more frequently when it is dark outside.  You can add equipment to your bike to make it more visible, but you will also want to be dressed appropriately so you can be more visible as well.  For instance, if you have a light fall jacket you like to ride your bike while wearing, you may want to add some reflective tape to it so that you can be seen more easily.  If you want to take your safety real seriously you will want to get yourself a vest that is entirely reflective so you can be seen easily.

2.) Don’t forget warmth.  There is nothing more distracting to a rider than when she/he is riding and is cold and uncomfortable.  Being cold or uncomfortable can really distract you from taking the right precautions to keep yourself safe.  The weather can be unpredictable in the fall and it is important to be prepared.  Wearing layers can help prevent you from being cold while riding.  Layering can be your best friend when trying to stay warm and be safe while riding your bike.

3.) Wear gloves.  Gloves provide a number of different safety purposes while riding a bike.  The first and probably most obvious is that they protect your hands from getting cold.  This is the common reason most people wear gloves.  Another reason, that you may not think about when considering gloves is that they protect your hands from blisters and scratches that can become uncomfortable over time and lead to you being distracted while on your bike.  Gloves can be a good source of comfort for you as you ride and keep you free of distractions.

Making good choices when you get on a bike is so important.  These good choices should extend to your clothing choices.  If you are wearing the proper gear when riding you will be in a much better place to avoid a New Haven bicycle accident then you otherwise would be if you did not wear the right clothes.  Clothes are an essential part of your riding safety procedures and making sure you take this seriously will insure that you are riding more safely through the streets.
