In what seems like an every week occurrence another wrong way New Haven auto accident has occurred leaving one dead and closing multiple lanes of i-95. These incidents continue to be a major problem in the state of Connecticut and are leaving safety officials scratching their heads at how to protect drivers and passengers from these reckless events.

In this particular incident a driver was headed northbound in a southbound lane in the very early hours of the morning and drove head on into a truck catching the truck on fire. The driver was dead on the scene and the passengers in the truck were transported to the hospital with only minor injuries.

Wrong way crashes can have devastating impacts and often occur at high speeds which increase the level of severity. One of the most powerful ways we can do our part to bring awareness to this problem is to talk with our friends and neighbors about the dangers of this epidemic and also follow a few simple rules for ourselves when on the road.

1.) Avoid driving very late at night or into the early morning hours. Often these crashes occur after establishments that serve alcohol close and those who were there drinking get behind the wheel and head out on the road. If you have to be out on the road at that late of an hour, use extreme caution when passing by on and off ramps to highways.

2.) Do not drink and drive. This goes without saying any time of the day, but if you’ve been out at a bar or restaurant and had a few drinks you should never get behind the wheel of a vehicle. If you are out and unexpectedly have too much to drink, don’t be afraid to get a ride share ride and return to that location in the morning to pick up your car. It may be an inconvenience, but it may also save your life.

3.) If you are tired, do not get behind the wheel. Some studies have shown that drowsy driving is nearly as dangerous as driving while under the influence of alcohol. While it may seem, in the moment, that getting to your destination is urgent, it can wait if it means there is a potential of you getting into a collision. If you are drowsy, your reaction time will be reduced and even if you are not the person driving on the wrong side of the road, you may not be able to react in time to avoid the dangerous on-coming vehicle.

Injuries from New Haven auto accidents happen from time to time, but there are certainly ways that you can keep yourself and your passengers safe. If you take a few of these simple steps you may be able to avoid putting yourself in a situation where you would be facing down a wrong way driver. It is important to know when the dangerous times of day are and avoid them in any way that you can.
