While it is absolutely critical that we pay attention to distracted driving safety all year round, we take each April to shine a red hot spotlight on this increasing problem.  The more people that can be educated about the dangers of distracted driving, the safer our roads will be from unnecessary New Haven auto accidents.  All month long we will be sharing tips on how to prevent yourself from engaging in this dangerous behavior.  There are some distractions that are easier then others to understand.  Texting while driving, for instance, is a pretty clear distracted driving behavior.  On the other hand, cognitive distracted driving (like talking to a passenger) may not be as clear cut of a case for most people.

So let’s start with the most obvious cases of distracted driving and that is texting while driving.  First, some statistics, from the National Safety Council you should know;

  1. There are nearly 400,000 injuries each year in the United States caused by texting while driving
  2. 25% of all traffic injuries occur due to drivers who are texting at the time of the accident
  3. If you are texting while driving you are increasing the amount of time your eyes are not on the road by 400%
  4. Texting is THE most dangerous activity you can participate in that involves a cell phone while driving

Texting while driving is one of the most dangerous things you can do in your car.  The best thing you can do to prevent yourself from texting while driving is to stow away your cell phone while you are behind the wheel.  Barring this you can turn off notifications while driving and NEVER connect your phone’s text messaging functionality to your dashboard entertainment system.

Each and every month of the year it is important to be aware of the things, big and small, that you do while driving that can take your eyes of the road and lead to unsafe conditions which could result in a New Haven auto accident.  This April you can do your part by not participating in any of these distracted driving behaviors and also, by spreading the word about these dangers.
