New Haven Auto Accidents: Drugged Driving Now More Common
April 26, 2017In a new study released by the Governors Highway Safety Association, 43% drivers involved in fatal crashes were under the influence of drugs compared to 37% of drivers who were under the influence of alcohol in 2015. This was the first time drugs overtook alcohol as a cause for a fatal accident. Of the drivers tested for drugs, one third tested positive for marijuana and roughly 9% had taken amphetamines (highly addictive drugs that are central nervous system stimulators).
The issue of drug impaired driving is extremely complex as it relates to New Haven auto accidents. Drugs of all types can impair driving, not just those that are illegal. Some drugs are legal to use under certain conditions and others are readily available over the counter. It can be challenging for an officer to detect a drug impairment roadside.
