Poor Lighting Can Lead To A New Haven Slip and Fall Accident
September 23, 2023The weather is changing and the days are getting shorter, that means there are many more opportunities to be out and about when it is dark out. For this reason it is possible that you will be in a situation where the lighting where you are walking will not be good and it could leave you at risk of getting into a New Haven slip and fall accident which could injure you.
When long summer days turn into long autumn nights you can be in a situation where your footing may not be as steady as it once was. There are a variety of reasons for that, but the main reason is that when the sun goes down earlier you will find yourself out in the dark more frequently in the fall then you might in the summer months. While there are other dangers out there like wet leaves and black ice, the most likely culprit for you getting injured is a lack of good lighting where you are stepping.
It would likely be a little bit cumbersome to carry around a flash light everywhere you go and even the flashlight on your phone is not a great one to light the way you walk. Since it is not possible to carry light with you everywhere you go it is important that you spend some time thinking about the places where poor lighting might be a significant problem and do your best to avoid those places or give yourself extra time to move through these locations so you can watch each step you take.
The places that may be of concern for poor lighting include, but are not limited to the following;
1.) Stairwells. It is important that a stairwell is well lit for those who are climbing the stairs past dark, but in the event that they are not, they present a serious hazard for anyone who is climbing the stairs from dusk to dawn. Not only is it dangerous to climb stairs that are not well lit, it is probably one of the most likely scenarios to lead to an injury due to the height you will find yourself at when you’re climbing the stairs. If you are on a set of stairs that has little or no lighting you will want to make sure you take each step carefully and insure that you have secured your footing before you take the next step.
2.) Uneven sidewalks. While there are quite a few sidewalks in the Elm City that are well lit, there are also many that are not and these can present a real hazard if you’re not careful. You will need to take your time in areas that are not lit well and you may need to slow your walk to one slow step at a time so you do not end up tripping over an uneven sidewalk surface that could leave you injured.
3.) Parking lots. Whether you’re in one of the many parking garages around the city or the parking lot of a major retailer you may come across spots in the parking lots that are poorly lit. It is a necessity to park your car and it may be something that you have to do at night which will require you to be walking around these poorly lit areas very carefully. If you’re not able to bring a flashlight with you, you may need to use the flashlight on your phone in parking lots to help give you at least a little light in front of your every step so you do not end up tripping or slipping and putting yourself in a dangerous situation.
While you may not be able to avoid all poorly lit scenarios, there is a good chance you can take a few steps to not put yourself at too high of a risk of getting into a New Haven slip and fall accident by walking through a dimly lit area. Carrying a flashlight with you everywhere you go may not be practical, but you might consider leaving one in your car so you can have it in the event that where you’ve parked for the night won’t be as dimly lit when you pass through it.
