Use This Guidance To Inform Your Social Media Presence After An Accident
April 8, 2025If you’re involved in a New Haven auto accident you already know that your actions will be scrutinized by insurance adjusters who have the responsibility to their employer that they should pay you out the least amount of money possible. In a previous post, we talked about how and why they might do that.

If you’re typically someone who is active on social media and you don’t want to give that up after an accident occurs you may want to follow some guidance so you can continue to post as you normally would, but so that it doesn’t impact your insurance claim. The last thing you want to do is have a post you make be misconstrued or taken out of context in a way that makes it so that you aren’t able to be fully compensated for your injuries.
To that end, here is some guidance you can use to make sure that you are responsibly posting on social media after your accident;
Be Mindful of Everything You Post: Exercise extreme caution with all your social media activity. Think twice before posting anything that could be interpreted as contradicting your injury claims or suggesting a level of physical or emotional well-being that doesn’t accurately reflect your situation.
Temporarily Adjust Your Privacy Settings: Consider increasing the privacy settings on all your social media accounts to limit who can see your posts. However, remember that even private posts aren’t entirely immune to discovery.
Inform Your Friends and Family: Ask your close contacts to be mindful of what they post and tag you in. A photo or comment from a friend could also be used against you.
Avoid Discussing Your Accident or Injuries Online: Never post details about the New Haven auto accident, your injuries, or your legal case on social media. Anything you say can be taken out of context and used to undermine your claim.
Let’s focus on this last one that is so critical. If you are accustomed to sharing every detail of your life online, this is one you are going to want to skip. Discussing the accident on your social media accounts can lead to significant issues for your claim, not to mention you have no control over what someone else may comment or share on your page. If this is the case, you are better off keeping the details of your New Haven auto accident off of social media all together.
Truthfully the best way to avoid social media impacting your claim is to go “radio silent” on all of your social channels while you are involved in trying to be compensated for your accident. If you don’t post about anything, anywhere, you will be in a much better position.
