5 Quick Tips To Keep You Safe This Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day Weekend is upon us and as we celebrate the “unofficial” start to summer it is also important to take a moment to honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom to celebrate.  The women and men who have died to give us the right to share a friendly hello with our neighbor or break bread with someone we may disagree with on almost everything should be honored with words of remembrance but also demonstrations of the freedoms that they fought so valiantly to protect for all U.S. citizens.

With that in mind, as you are celebrating this weekend, you will want to make sure you are doing so responsibly and with safety in mind so all of our neighbors can be a part of the celebration of the start of summer and the freedoms that we all exercise everyday.  In order to do this there are some safety tips you should keep in mind as you spend time welcoming in the summer months.

Whether you’re at a cookout with friends, a beach day with family or just spending time around a roaring fire with neighbors, you will want to keep these tips in mind so you can be safe while also having a great time.

1.) Drink responsibly.  This is the easiest one.  If you’re going to be drinking you should limit your alcohol intake to a responsible level and never get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you’ve had any alcohol.  Utilize a ride sharing service like Uber or designate a driver before your day begins.

2.) Pay extra close attention to the road if you are out driving.  The roads are going to be more congested then usual and therefore they will require a focused attention from you.  Distractions should be eliminated all together and speeds should be at posted speed limit levels.

3.) Keep children away from open flames of any kind including, but not limited to, fire pits, grills and candles.  Children are curious by nature and they may reach out to touch an open flame which could lead to serious injuries.

4.) If you’re at the beach or at a pool you should always designate an adult to be the supervisor for kids who are swimming.  Kids need eyes on them at all times and if you don’t have a designated adult to supervise the swimming activity you may find your child or someone else’s child in a difficult situation.

5.) Watch any gates that may be open in your yard and make sure to keep them latched if they are not being actively used.  An open gate is a dangerous way for a child to get out into traffic or an animal to make it’s way into your yard and cause concern among guests or your family.

Having fun over a long weekend at the start of the summer with so much fun ahead can be a great thing to do to help you relax and spend quality time with family and friends, but if a New Haven personal injury accident occurs you may be in a situation where you are not remembering this weekend fondly at all.  Take some of the safety tips above and you can be celebrating safely and without incident all weekend long.
