Collect This Information If You’re Ever In A New Haven Auto Accident

We hope that you are never in a New Haven auto accident, but if you do, you should be prepared with what information you collect.  If you leave the scene of the accident without all of the pertinent information it can slow down your insurance claim or completely stall it and not allow you to get the proper financial and medical attention that you need and are entitled to.  In that vein, it is important that you know what information you need to collect so when you sit down to file your claim or work with one of our experienced attorneys to help you with your claim you have all of the information you need.

Understanding the need for this information is important whether you are the driver of the vehicle or a passenger as often what will happen is that the driver will get shaken up by the accident and she/he will forget bits and pieces of the information that is needed.  It is important to have someone by your side who can be a second memory to encourage you to get all of the information that you need to make sure you are protected in the long run.  If you’re a passenger in a vehicle you should be prepared with this information as well.

The information that you need to collect will depend on the accident circumstances, but in all accidents you should collect the following;

1.) Contact information for everyone that was involved in the accident.  This includes getting information like names, email addresses, phone numbers and physical addresses of the driver of the other vehicle, any passengers of the other vehicle and contact information from witnesses if there are any.

2.) A precise location of the incident should be recorded.  If you are at a cross street, record that.  If you are able to see the numbers on nearby buildings, you should record that.  Anything you can collect that will specify as clearly as possible where the accident occurred will be beneficial.

3.) These days it is not often that you are without a camera, so if you have your camera handy, you will want to photograph the scene.  Take pictures from all angles possible and make sure you can identify what the pictures are of when you take them.  One other important photo to get is that of the license plates on the vehicles involved.

4.)  You will want to collect all of the insurance information for the others who are involved.  Do not forget to get the policy number, company name and phone number for the insurance company that you will need to contact.

This is the information that you will want to collect if your New Haven auto accident does not have emergency services personnel show up to the scene.  If you DO have emergency services arrive at the scene you will also want to make sure you get the police report number, a phone number for the police officer and the officer’s name and badge number.

You may not be in the right frame of mind to remember all of this if you do get into an accident so it might be a good idea to print this post or write down what is described above and keep it in your purse or your wallet in the event that you will need it.

Contact our office if you are injured in an accident and one of our experienced attorneys can help you sort through the process.  We will work with you to review the information you have collected and protect your long-term interests.
