Good News About Drunk Driving Related Deaths From 2019
July 11, 2021The most recent statistical information that relates to drunk driving related deaths has been made available by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) who reported that the percentage of drunk driving deaths in the United States reached it’s lowest point in 2019 since 1984. The NHTSA started collecting data in 1984 so the number could be the lowest ever, but that is an unknown.
Regardless of statistics drunk driving is a serious cause of New Haven auto accidents and should be treated as such. Study after study has shown that those who drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol put themselves at greater risk of getting into a fatal car crash. While the statistics from 2019 are a positive sign there is still far too much work to be done to insure that lives are not lost with a drunk driver behind the wheel.
Some other staggering statistics from 2019 that continue to be a red flag include:
- Each day 28 people die in a drunk driving accident in the United States alone
- 1 person every 52 minutes died in a drunk driving crash
- 10,142 people lost their lives in 2019 due to a drunk driving incident
It is good news that 2019 was statistically a year of low deaths in drunk driving related accidents, but still having over 10,000 people die each year due to this tragedy is far too many. Staying sober behind the wheel is the best way you can protect yourself from getting into a New Haven auto accident. While it is not the only way to protect yourself it is certainly one of the best ways. You should also drive defensively at night when incidents of driving under the influence are at their highest level.
