New Haven schools are letting out for summer soon and many families will be hitting the road to start a summer vacation. Before your family heads out, take a few moments for some minor check to prevent a breakdown or worse, a New Haven auto accident.

New information from AAA shows that vehicles over 10 years old have 4x the chances of needing a tow and twice as likely to suffer a breakdown.

The top three vehicle issues that could derail a road trip are:

Batteries –  A battery on the brink of dying rarely warns a driver before it fails. Having a simple battery test including testing the vehicle’s starter and alternator, can help prevent many problems.

Engines – Radiators, thermostats and water pumps may fail without warning. Fluids such as coolant pooling underneath a parked vehicle is as an indication of an impending problem. Many older vehicles also have timing belts that should be replaced.

Tires –  Minimize the chance of a flat tire before travel by checking tread depth, tire pressure and whether the vehicle is equipped with a spare tire.
