Whether it is a New Haven auto accident or disabled vehicle with engine troubles or a flat tire, we all have traveled along the road and have seen emergency vehicles helping others. But did you know that it is mandatory that you move over?

On October 1, 2009 the law went into effect and requires the following:

  1. Driver to slow down to a reasonable speed when emergency vehicles are in the shoulder,or breakdown lane and then move over to another lane if it is safe to do so.
  2. Emergency vehicles must have their lights on including police cars, fire trucks, maintenance vehicles, ambulances or other EMS vehicles, and wrecker/tow trucks.

Not only does this law keep motorists safe, but it keeps police officers, firefighters, EMS workers, and tow truck drivers from workers’ compensation injuries and claims. If you or a loved one were injured because a motorist failed to move over while you were on the side of the road, contact our office immediately.
